László Paskai

László Cardinal Paskai OFM ( born May 8, 1927 in Szeged, Hungary) is a retired Archbishop of Esztergom- Budapest.

Life

László Paskai, was born as the son of from Judaism to Christianity converted parents who were Holocaust victims later. After leaving school, joined the Franciscan order and studied Catholic theology in Gyöngyös and at the seminary of Budapest. In 1951 he received the sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked community chaplain in the Diocese Nagyvarad. In 1952 he earned his doctorate at the University of Budapest to the doctor of theology and entered then in his hometown Szeged place of the Episcopal Zeremoniars.

From 1955 to 1962 he lectured as a professor of theology and philosophy at the seminary of Szeged and worked as a librarian. From 1962 to 1965 he served as spiritual director candidates to the priesthood of the Seminary of Szeged, 1965 to 1973, he took the same task right at the seminary of Budapest, which he served as rector from 1973 to 1978.

1978 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Titular Bishop of Bavagaliana and Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Veszprém. The episcopal ordination he received on April 6, 1978 by the Archbishop of Esztergom, László Cardinal Lékai. A year later, László Paskai was then bishop of Veszprém. 1982 Pope John Paul II appointed him to the Archbishopric of Kalocsa Koadjutorerzbischof, 1987, Archbishop of Esztergom- Budapest.

On June 28, 1988, he was accepted as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Teresa al Corso d' Italia in the College of Cardinals.

The management of the Archdiocese of Esztergom- Budapest, he resigned in December 2002 on grounds of age.

He is Grand Prior of the Order of the Hungarian Province Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem.
