Latcho Drom

Latcho Drom is a 1993 film produced that coming from Algeria, French director Tony Gatlif.

The film deals with the migration of the gypsies, and more particularly of the Roma from India to North Africa and Europe. Latcho Drom is an expression in Romani and means something like " Bon Voyage ". The film does not use any dialogue or drama performances. The only stylistic devices are the music of the Roma and their occurrences, which has experienced in the respective countries this music, in which individual Roma tribes have settled. The performers are all professional or amateur musicians.

Action

The film includes eight episodes that are associated with individual countries. In each episode one or several songs or pieces of music are performed by Roma musicians. The film begins in the desert of Rajasthan, the presumed origin of the Roma people, continues over Egypt and Turkey. In the episode, set in Romania, the musical group Taraf de Haïdouks occurs. The subsequent episode leads to Hungary and Czechoslovakia. The French episode takes place mainly in Les Saintes- Maries- de -la -Mer. There Dorado Schmitt and give his cousin Tchavolo Schmitt several gypsy jazz pieces for the best. The film ends in the Spanish Badajoz, where first several flamenco pieces are played. The film concludes the singer La Caita with the song " El pajaro negro" ( the black bird).
