Latvian White (pig)

The Latvian White pig ( Latvian: Latvijas Baltā ) is a breed of pig from Latvia.

Breeding history

The breed was created by native Latvian pigs with Large White and partly German Diamond pigs were crossed. In 1967 the Latvian White pig was officially recognized as a multi- purpose breed.

  • Weight 251 kg sows, boars 321 kg
  • Time to 100 kg: 192 days

There are 9 main lines and 16 families. The race serves as the parent breed.

Occurrence

Main breeding centers are located in Riga, Dobele, Jēkabpils, Liepāja in Latvia and Aizkraukle Rajons. The Latvian White pig makes up 95.8 % of Latvia's pig population and amounted in 1980 to 279,000 purebred animals.
