Laurent-Guillaume de Koninck

Laurent -Guillaume de Koninck ( May 3, 1809 in Leuven, † July 16, 1887 in Liège ) was a Belgian palaeontologist and chemist.

He studied medicine at the State University of Leuven and in 1831 assistant at the Department of Chemistry. In Paris, Berlin and Giessen, he continued his studies, and taught in Ghent and Liège later. In 1856 he was appointed professor of chemistry at the University of Liège. A post he held until his death.

Around the year 1835, he began to devote his spare time to the study of the fossils of the Carboniferous Kohlenkalks around Liege. By the time he gained a reputation as an expert on Paleozoic fossils, mainly because of its descriptions of mollusks, brachiopods, crinoids, crustaceans and the Kohlenkalks of Belgium. In recognition of his services to him the Geological Society of London in 1875 awarded the Wollaston Medal, and in 1876 he was appointed professor of paleontology at the University of Liege. The Royal Society of New South Wales awarded him the 1886 Clarke Medal.
