Lauterbach (Werra)

Mihla, bank reinforcement on Lauterbach

Lauterbach is a 9.4 km long, orographic right tributary of the river Werra in Thuringia, Germany.

Course

The Lauterbach springs east of Berka vor dem Hainich, on the saddle between the 468 m high Löhberg in Hainich and the 424 m high Lohberg same south-southwest, from multiple sources. The Lauterbachtal forms the Berka Mihlaer trough, the river collects only north of Berka from a whole number of small streams and is also flussab reinforced by many lateral inflows. These have cut shallow, deep channels in the inclined layers of the Keuper. Strong tectonic sources secure the water supply even in midsummer, the source brawn Born south opposite the Castle Hill and the Trippel.

First, the stream flows through three kilometers a deeply carved and spiral, first to the north-west and finally westward valley until he meets on the southern edge of the municipality Bischofroda on the Augraben. Here, the flow direction changes again to the northwest. Below Lauterbach to the local situation of Mihla concludes with a short, natural section. In Mihla the river is largely constrained by walls in a river bed and reached at the horror castle the Werra.

Name

The name could be derived from louder = clear and pure, the community Lauterbach is named after the river.

Flood protection

In the flood disaster of 23 May 1978 triggered by heavy rain, were complained of great economic damage in the places Bischofroda, Lauterbach and Mihla which led to the construction of two flood retention earth dams in the district Bischofroda:

  • The retention basin Bischofroda I was built 1985-1986 and blocks the valley of Sülzaue and thus the headwaters of Lauterbach. The maximum storage capacity is 200,000 m³. The dam is 9.5 m high and allows a maximum storage height of 8 m ( Lage51.05419444444410.373694444444 ).
  • The retention basin Bischofroda II was built 1987-1988 and locks the Ebental north of Bischofroda. The maximum permitted storage space should be 4.5 ha. This dam also allows a maximum storage height of 8 m ( Lage51.064510.363361111111 ).
  • The retention basin Berka vd Hainich on Augraben east of Berka is a priority of irrigation ( Lage51.04205555555610.3935 ).
