Lauwersmeer

The Lauwers is a (former) Bay in the north of the Netherlands. The name comes from the river Lauwers, the border between the provinces of Groningen and Friesland. The result is the Lauwers Sea in the storm surge from in 1280.

There were many plans for damming the bay, but none has been implemented. After the flood of 1953, the drainage was decided. 1960, the decision was implemented and began the construction of a 13 km long dam with sluices and locks. On 25 May 1969, the bay was completed and embanked from the sea. So the Lauwersmeer arose.

With the seawall the water of Reitdiep, the Dokkumerdiep and Dokkumer Ee could not directly flow into the North Sea. Thus the water was brackish and nature changed, a new flora and fauna originated. To protect this area was decided on 12 November 2003 to establish the National Park Lauwersmeer.
