The Lawa (also Aoua ) is a border river between Suriname and French Guiana.

Headwaters of the Lawa are the Litani and the Marouini (also Marowini ). The Lawa and the Tapanahony flow together at the river island Stoelmanseiland to Marowijne.

In the middle course of the river there are a great many gold mines. 1902 decided the Surinamese Governor Cornelis Lely to build the Lawabahn from Paramaribo to this gold deposit. Due to the disappointing sales of gold, but was built from the track only the first half of Paramaribo.

After heavy rains came in May 2006, severe floods inland.
