Lawrence is an impact crater in the area between the Sea of ​​Tranquility on the west and north-west of Mare Fecunditatis. The crater Taruntius lies to the southeast. The Rima Cauchy crosses the eastern part of the Sea of ​​Tranquility and extends to the northern edge of Lawrence.

Lawrence was flooded by lava, so that only a lower ring of the original crater rim projecting over the surface. This edge has openings in the north and southwest, while the eastern part is largely preserved.

The crater is named after the physicist Ernest O. Lawrence and astronaut Robert Henry Lawrence, Jr.. Before he by the International Astronomical Union ( IAU) received its present name in 1973, Lawrence was under the name ' Taruntius M' known.
