Lawrenceville is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia and the county seat of Gwinnett County.

History

Lawrenceville was incorporated by the Georgia General Assembly on 15 December 1821. The city was named after James Lawrence, a naval officer and commander of the frigate Chesapeake in the War of 1812. The town's name was proposed by the first head of the post office, William Maltbie in honor of the ministry of Lawrence.

Larry Flynt and his lawyer Gene Reeves Jr. were shot on March 6, 1978 in Lawrenceville after a court hearing by Joseph Paul Franklin. Both survived the attack, Flint, however, was paralyzed from the waist down.
