Layout (computing)

A layout engine is a computer program used to prepare image and text information for the output on the screen or other suitable media.

Examples are the HTML rendering in a web browser or the generation of printable works in desktop publishing by typesetting programs. This, in turn, use program libraries for drawing and layout of text characters such as Pango.
