Lazaro Cardenas is located in the state of Michoacan in western central Mexico. In the port city which is dominated by the steel industry live 162 997 inhabitants ( 2005). The Río Balsas opens in Lázaro Cárdenas in the Pacific Ocean.

History

The town initially led the name Los Llanitos. On April 12, 1947, the Congress of Michoacán, the founding of the church " Melchor Ocampo del Balsas " decided. The renaming of the city Lázaro Cárdenas took place in 1970 in honor of the former president Lázaro Cárdenas del Río.

Economy

Seaport

The sea port of Lázaro Cárdenas, with an area of over 2,500 hectares and a depth of 16.5 m, the deepest Mexican port. He is regarded as a central link between the drug producers in South America and the northern markets. Various cartels fought there in the Mexican drug war and bloody battles. On 4 November 2013, the Navy took over in the context of the control of the harbor. 50 city police officers were taken into custody for the time being because of the suspicion of working with the cartels and the customs officers were replaced.

Airport

With its own domestic airport Lázaro Cárdenas is also connected by air with Mexico City and other Mexican cities.
