Le Creusot

Le Creusot is a commune in the Saône -et -Loire in Burgundy. It belongs to the district of Autun and is the capital of the cantons Le Creusot - Est Le Creusot -Ouest. Le Creusot forms, together with Montceau -les -Mines a small industrial area.

Le Creusot is with 22,620 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) to Chalon -sur -Saône and Mâcon, the third largest city of the department. The economy is predominantly shaped by the metal processing industry ( SIAG France, Industeel, Schneider Electric). The origin of this industry, as represented in the city arms industry also was the founding of the Royal foundry by François Ignace de Wendel and William Wilkinson in 1781., Coal deposits in the area were the then small village to the excellent location for the manufacture of cannons for the Marine. Already in 1820 here was France's largest iron foundry owned by Aaron Manby.
