Montceau-les-Mines

Montceau -les -Mines is a town with 19,124 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Saône -et -Loire in the Burgundy region of France. The city lies on the Ship Canal Canal du Centre, as well as the parallel flow Bourbince.

The 1266 first mentioned city is located in an area that was operated in since the early 19th century coal mining, first in Blanzy and some other neighboring municipalities and from 1820 in the municipality Montceaus itself in 1884 were around 6,500 people, nearly one in four residents in mining active. In the 1880s, seceded from the union movement an anarcho syndicalist group, the gang noire ( "black gang" ), from and perpetrated in Montceau several attacks on churches and upper-class people and facilities. In 1992, the last underground stop operating, closed in 2002, the last open pit its doors.

2007 was the city through their football club FC Montceau Bourgogne nationwide in the press. The fourth division was in the cup, the two first division club Girondins Bordeaux and RC Lens defeated and resigned only from the semi-final against FC Sochaux.

Montceau -les -Mines is twinned with Geislingen (Baden- Württemberg) and the birthplace of the poet and essayist André Frénaud ( 1907-1991 ).
