Ruin of Le Destroit, 2008

Le Destroit ( Latin: Districtum, Arabic: Casel least stimulus, even Bayas, Khirbat Dustray, Petra Incisa ) is a Crusader fortress near the village of Atlit in Israel today. It is located about 20 kilometers south of Haifa, about a kilometer from the sea.

History

The Crusaders of the Kingdom of Jerusalem built the castle relatively small at the latest in 1103 on the ruins of an ancient predecessor system. In the course of the 12th century Le Destroit came into the possession of the Knights Templar. During the Fifth Crusade in 1218 to the Order built in less than two kilometers to the west on a peninsula in the Mediterranean a stronger fortress called Chateau Pelerin. Le Destroit subsequently lost importance and was finally destroyed in 1264 by the Mamluks.
