Le Monnier (crater)

59.71

Le Monnier is the remnant of a lunar crater that is partially filled with lava. It is located on the eastern edge of Mare Serenitatis and the western part of the edge is missing, so that it now forms a large bay. North is adjacent to the crater Chacornac.

The interior of the formation is relatively flat and smooth with no major Kräterchen on the surface. The outer edge is highly irregular and scarred from previous strikes.

The landing site of Luna 21 is near the southern edge of Le Monnier. Lunokhod 2, a robot car aboard Luna 21 laid 38 kilometers back through the crater. It also examined the southern crater rim. The smaller craters are defined by a convention featured on lunar maps by letters that are assigned in the distance to the crater.

The following lunar crater have been named by the International Astronomical Union ( IAU):

  • Le Monnier B - see craters Very
  • Le Monnier C - see craters Borel
