Leandro Izaguirre

Leandro Izaguirre ( born February 13, 1867 in Mexico City; † February 26, 1941 ) was a Mexican painter and illustrator.

Biography

Izaguirre studied from 1884 Rebull Santiago and José Salomé Piña at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes ( ENBA ) in his hometown and after four years in Europe. His most famous picture was taken in 1892 and is titled El Suplicio de Cuauhtemoc ( Cuauhtemoc Spoilt ). As part of an exhibition in Philadelphia in 1893, he was awarded a medal for it. After the death of Juan Urrichis he also took over its successor in 1893 and taught as a professor of drawing at the ENBA. He also spent some time working as an illustrator for the newspaper Mundo ilustrado. In view of the forthcoming establishment of the Secretaría de Educación Pública President Díaz sent him from 1904 to 1906 as an inspector to Europe. He then taught again at the ENBA.
