Lebrecht Blücher Dreves
Leberecht (also Lebrecht ) Blücher Dreves ( born September 12, 1816 in Hamburg, † December 19, 1870 in Feldkirch (Vorarlberg) ) was a German lawyer, notary and poet, dramatist, historian and translator.
Life
Leberecht Blücher Dreves came in 1816 as the son of merchant and Commission Council Johann Karl Dreves to the world. His mother was Helene Margarete Dreves, born Niemeier, daughter of a merchant from the Oldenburg Varel; paternal grandfather of the Superintendent Simon Peter was in Boitzenburg. Dreves godfather was the Field Marshal Blücher, whose first and last name, he received; the latter he used no longer in the course of his life.
Dreves visited the Hamburg scholar school and took a law degree in 1836 at the University of Jena. In 1838 he moved to Heidelberg, received his PhD in Dr. jur. and for a year was later settled as a lawyer in Hamburg. From 1842 to 1848 he was editor of the New Hamburg leaves.
On February 2, 1846 Dreves occurred during a trip to Austria in the chapel of the papal nuncio in Vienna, Cardinal Michele Viale - Prelà, to the Catholic faith. " With my parents and other relatives ," Dreves wrote in a published towards the end of his life autobiography, " not found my conversion the slightest offense, yes they were in my father's influence that he began to be very interested in the Catholic Church. " in the same year received a Dreves released notary office in Hamburg, which he held until 1861.
In 1853 he married Marie salmine, the nineteen year old, catholic baptized daughter of Gustav Alexander upholsterer salmine. 1854 came her son Guido Maria to the world, the clergyman and also a well-known poet of hymns was. In addition, the couple had two daughters. Born in 1862 Clara married in 1881 the city architect of Feldkirch, Seraphin Pümpel ( 1847-1930 ).
1862 could be Dreves Feldkirch in the Vorarlberg, where he died in 1870 after a long illness.
Poet
Under the influence of Baron Joseph von Eichendorff, with whom he was friends, Dreves began in 1837 with the publication of poems. Also Adelbert von Chamisso and Friedrich Rückert among his poetic models. In 1848, to Dreves to a cure in Dresden and lived with Eichendorff in Linke'schen bathroom. The following year, Eichendorff issued a selection of Dreves ' poems.
In 1843 he began to write political songs in the spirit of the pre-March period, which he had published anonymously under the title Songs of a Hanseatic and provided with a dedicatory poem to Ferdinand Freiligrath. Also on Hölderlin taught Dreves a lyrical invocation.
After his conversion, numerous spiritual songs and adaptations arose Latin hymns. Several of his songs were translated into French by Achille Millien. He translated his part hymns and writings from the Church Latin, but has also brought rough translations of the poetry of Hans Christian Andersen from the pen of Henry Zeise in poetic form.
His church history works mainly concern the Catholic communities in Northern Germany.
Among his most famous works, the freedom song book ( " Saw a Prince, a book stand ... " ) is one of the songs of a Hanseatic League, which was sung as a parody of the pre-March censorship ratios after Heinrich Werner melody Goethe Heidenröslein. Also homecoming ( " Tired returns a wanderer back ...") from Matins, sung to the tune of an unknown composer, found since 1880, widely used as an argument advanced by minstrels ballad.
Manuscripts by Leberecht Dreves preserve inter alia, the Vorarlberg State Library and the Bavarian State Library in Munich.
