Lech dl Dragon

The Lech dl Dragon ( German Drachensee ) is only temporarily existent glacial lake in the Sella Group in South Tyrol. It lies at an altitude of 2680 m on the Val Gardena valley in the municipality of Selva.

Natural History

The Lech dl Dragon is a Ice Lake or Gletscherrandsee. As such, the lake is not always available. It originates in the glacier in the stage of the two -story Sella massif ( Mëisules Plateau ), which is below the scree slope of the upper floor of the main dolomite. In the 1970s, the lake disappeared and appeared around 2003 by 2007. In 2009, the lake was almost gone completely. The lake is heavily colored by the turquoise glacier milk.

The glacier mass has on the Meisules plateau is greatly reduced (see the pictures of the lake from the years 1950 and 2004), but could be about 300 m east observed in 2011, a new formation of the lake. The new lake is larger than the older Seeausbildung and also the ice face twice as powerful as the 2005.

A few hundred meters further east, an approximately 50 m wide crater was observed in the rubble. One edge of the crater consists of about 8 m high wall of ice. This crater is likely to be the precursor of a new lake.

Legend

The Ladin field name " Lech dl Dragon" is derived from the fact that you could hear in Selva and on the pastures at the Gardena Pass often eerie noises that supposedly came from the lake. The natural phenomenon of turbulent glacial lake was declared in popular belief etiologically with contending and flying in the sunset dragons.
