Lehliu Gară

Lehliu Gară is a town in the district Calarasi in Wallachia region of Romania.

Location

Lehliu Gară located in the Great Wallachia 60 km east of the provincial capital city of Bucharest, in the Bărăgan - steppe. The county town Calarasi is located about 50 km south-east.

History

The town was only at the end of the 19th century. At that time the railway from Bucharest was built by the Bărăgan - steppe Feteşti. In the sparsely populated region of Lehliu station was set up, which was named after a 5 km remote location. Around the station - especially north of the railway line - was a new town, the Lehliu Gară (literally " station Lehliu " ) was called.

As a result, the station settlement developed to a local center of commerce and food processing.

1989 Lehliu Gară was appointed to the city. The main economic activities are agriculture and crafts. A major employer is opened in 2007 biodiesel factory of the Portuguese company Martifer.

Population

As of the 2002 census, 6,562 inhabitants were counted in the city, including 5,938 Romanians and 611 Roma. Approximately 3,600 lived in Lehliu Gară itself, the other in the two incorporated villages.

Traffic

Lehliu Gară lies on the railway line from Bucharest to Constanta. In both directions currently operate (2009) about five commuter trains and four express trains daily. South of the city run the A2 motorway and the National Road 3 from Bucharest to Constanta. There are bus connections to Bucharest, Calarasi.
