Cooperation with Fuji

The mid-1990s Leica entered into a strategic alliance with Fuji film. This partnership went 1998 the first Digilux camera out. The expected high Leica claim was in these early OEM models not yet been met by adding a nobler housing and an increased price by far. The cameras of this series were largely identical to the Fuji models that were Leica Digilux, Leica Digilux Zoom and Leica Digilux 4.3. This partnership was not considered very fruitful and was discontinued in May 2001.

Cooperation with Panasonic

Leica Digilux 1

In spring 2002, Leica introduced in cooperation with Matsushita / Panasonic digital camera Digilux 1 on the market. This was the first product of this strategic partnership. Due to the relatively high speed and other qualities designated Leica Digilux 1 as the reportage camera and wanted to remember the legendary Leica I of 1925. In addition to the retro design, the large 2.5 "display with the unique fold- light shaft that catches your eye. As with classic cameras the controls in the form of buttons and dials are mounted on the camera body and do not have to first be selected via a menu.

The Leica Digilux 1 was considered by the Leica photographers with great skepticism ( after the early and as failures considered in efforts Digitalkamerabau Leica in collaboration with Fuji). Above all, the poor quality of the optical viewfinder ( for Leica ratios) as well as the high price prevented these modern for its time camera to be a great success.

The most outstanding feature of this camera is the high quality of the fixed mechanical zoom lens (Leica DC Vario- Summicron ). The retro design of the Digilux 2 is considered to be elegant and functional, the camera was designed by the designer Achim Heine.

The Digilux 2 has no optical viewfinder, but an electronic viewfinder. This led to criticism since the manual focus is difficult under low light conditions, one of the virtues of classic M- Leicas. Furthermore, the then high price of about 1,500 euros has been criticized because the nearly identical Panasonic DMC LC-1 was cheaper by about 300 euros.
