Leivur Øssursson

Leivur Øssursson (c. 980 in Gøta, Hov or Skúvoy, Faroe Islands; † before 1047 in Skúvoy; ? Leif ) is a figure of Faroese and was from 1035 ruler over the Faroe Islands.

Leivur is the son of Øssur Havgrímsson and the daughter of the " best farmers in the Faroe Islands ", whose name is not known.

His birthplace and year are unclear, but may be limited: Leivurs father Øssur died 983 at the age of 23 years and grew up with Tróndur in Gøta, got (maybe on his wedding day ) the court in Hov, the Øssurs father ( Leivurs grandfather) Havgrímur belonged, and at the same time the estate on Skúvoy where Brestir and Beinir once lived. Therefore, one of these three places is probably Leivurs birthplace.

Leivur was married to Tora Sigmundsdóttir, daughter of Sigmundur Brestisson and Turid Torkilsdóttir.

Olav the Holy in 1024 called three important Faroese to his Norway: The Løgmaður Gilli, Tórolvur Sigmundsson and Leivur Øssursson, then his followers were. But as long Tróndur í Gotu still alive, Olav could get no control over the Faroe Islands. Two ships were sent to collect taxes, disappeared on his way to the Faroe Islands without a trace, and that a third ship reached the Faroe Islands, but the Messenger of Karl was murdered back mořské after Tróndur could call this successfully on the Thing on Tinganes.

The situation changed after Tróndurs death 1035th Leivur, who was a Christian, Tróndurs took over autocracy and got the Faroe Islands in the same year by Magnus the Good fief. Formal remained the Faroe Islands until the Peace of Kiel in 1814 a Norwegian Crown land, as this was eliminated from the personal union with Denmark, and the Faroe Islands remained together with Iceland and Greenland in Denmark.
