Geography
Lemmenjoki springs from the Lemmekäsjärvi Lake in northwest Finland, flowing from southwest to northeast in the direction of Lake Inari. Initially, the river flows through a moorland landscape, later by a lonely, almost uninhabited mountain landscape with abandoned gold mining settlements. Before it flows into the lake, the river meanders Paatari strong. It flows through the Lemmenjoki National Park.
History
In the 1870s there was a "gold rush" on Lemmenjoki and the adjacent Ivalojoki. Even today there is mined for gold. There are currently about 60-70 gold miners have the claims in which they look for gold. Since only about four to six months can be used depending on the weather, the prospector must hurry to earn enough money to survive the extremely long winter. The winter lasts from October or November to about the end of April or even until well into May.
Tourist
Lemmenjoki is a popular river with moderate difficulty to undertake multi-day canoe hiking.
