Lemuel Paynter

Lemuel Paynter (* 1788 in Lewes, Delaware; † August 1, 1863 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1837 and 1841 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Lemuel Paynter attended the public schools of his home and then moved to Philadelphia. During the British - American War of 1812 he served in the state militia of Pennsylvania, in which he rose to lieutenant colonel. Paynter was for many years a member and temporary chairman of the government of the District of Southwark. In addition, he served as interim principal. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party, founded in 1828. In 1833 he was elected to the Senate of Pennsylvania.

In the congressional elections of 1836 Paynter in the first electoral district of Pennsylvania was in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Joel Barlow Sutherland on March 4, 1837. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1841 two legislative sessions. In 1840 he gave up another candidacy. After his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Paynter was again a member of the Executive Council of Southwark District. He died on August 1, 1863 in Philadelphia, where he was also buried.
