Lenexa is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas in Johnson County with 43 434 inhabitants ( 2005). Lenexa is located in close proximity to Overland Park, the second largest city in the state and Kansas City, the third largest city.
Lenexa is part of the metropolitan area of Kansas City.
History
Lenexa was founded in 1869. 12 years ago James Butler Hickok has acquired the first white American land within the municipality. In this area, an Indian tribe lived. The the chief called " Na - Nex -Se Blackhoof " widow sold in 1854 in a contract 6.500 km ² of the Kansas Shawnee Indian territory to the U.S. government. A little further west began the old Santa Fe Trail, which also touched on the southeastern part Lenexas to Santa Fe ( New Mexico). 1865 bought the " Kansas and Neosho Valley " railway company land on which they built a railway line. 1869, the connection was completed with a station in the area of the present town, which is also the founding date of the city. The name " Lenexa " borrowed from " Na - Nex -Se ". In the further course Lenexa developed into a bedroom community in the metropolitan Kansas City / Overland Park.

Lenexa is located at 38 ° 57'53 " north latitude and 94 ° 45'34 " west longitude. The area is 89.2 km ². 88.8 km ² of which land area is 0.4 km ² is water area.
Population
The results of the census of 2000 showed that 40 238 people live in Lenexa in 15,574 households.
89.5 % of residents are white, 6.5% African American, 3.6 % Asian, 0.3% Indians and 0.1 % others. The majority of the population is of German origin, namely 24.8 %.
The average family size was 3.08 persons. 3.4% of the population lived in 2000 below the poverty line.
