Leni Stern

Leni Stern ( born Magdalena Thora; born April 28, 1952 in Munich) is a German jazz guitarist, singer and pianist.

Life

She was interested early on in music and began playing the piano at the age of six years and eleven guitar. At 17, she founded her own theater company and later worked - under her birth name - as a television actress, among other things, Hanns Dieter Hüsch in the ARD series " Golden Sunday ".

In 1977, she turned more to the music and went to the U.S. to study in Boston at the Berklee College of Music. There she met her present husband, know the guitarist Mike Stern. In 1981, she moved to New York City and played as a guitarist in various rock and jazz bands. In 1983 she founded her own band with drummer Paul Motian and guitarist Bill Frisell and published in 1985 her first album under his own name: Clairvoyant.

Their cover version of Laura Nyros Song Upstairs by a Chinese Lamp appeared on the tribute album Time and Love: The Music of Laura Nyro. Since 1997, they released their albums on their own record label, Leni Stern Recordings ( LSR), the Jazz and music of singer- songwriters out there. Four times she was as Best Female Jazz Guitarist awarded the " Gibson Award".
