Leo Allatius

Leone Allacci, Leo ( n ) Allatius, Leo ( n ) Allatios, Leon Allatiusios (c. 1586; † January 19, 1669 ) was a Catholic convert, Greek classical scholar, librarian and theologian.

Life

Allacci was born on the Greek island of Chios, around the year 1586 in an orthodox environment. He first lived in Calabria, later in Rome, where he first taught Greek and later. Than favorite of Pope Gregory XV at the Greek College of St. Athanasius made ​​his career.

After the conquest of Heidelberg in 1622 by Tilly, the victorious Bavarian Elector Maximilian appropriated the precious Heidelberg Bibliotheca Palatina which he first wanted to take to Munich, on strong request of Pope Gregory XV. the Vatican. Pope Gregory transferred Allacci the removal of the manuscripts with a caravan of 200 mules across the Alps to Rome.

After the death of Gregory XV. 1623 Allacci was librarian of Cardinal Francesco Barberini in 1661 and was promoted to librarian of the Vatican, in which office he died in 1669.
