Leo Meyer (philologist)

Leo Karl Heinrich Meyer ( born July 3, 1830 in Bledeln; † 6 June 1910 in Göttingen ) was a German linguist, professor and Russian State Council.

Life

Meyer attended from 1844 to 1848 the Lyceum in Hannover and 1848-1849 high school in Minden wood. From 1849 to 1852 he studied with Theodor Benfey in Göttingen Philology, where he was also a member of the Corps Brunsviga. In 1856 he completed his habilitation in 1862 he became an associate professor. In 1865, he accepted an appointment at the Imperial University of Dorpat and took over the Chair of German and comparative linguistics. Among his students at Dorpat included Nikolai Anderson and Peter of Bradke. In 1877 he was appointed Imperial Russian State Council reality. From 1869 to 1899 Meyer was President of the scholars Estonian society, from 1894 he also received the honorary membership.

In January 1899 dismissed from his office in Dorpat, he went later than ord. Honorary Professor returned to Göttingen.
