History

On September 1, 1868, the railway line was opened in Bruck an der Mur, Leoben, and with it the first Leobner station, who, although he was always the most northerly of the then four stations in the urban area, then called by the Southern Railway Company South Station. On 1 December the same year the wings between St. Michael Leoben was completed Rudolf train, but only until the southern railway station Göß. Closing the gap between the two terminal stations was planned on the basis of disputes between competing railroads though and traced out, but will not be completed. 1872, the first section of the Erzbergbahn between Leoben and front mountain was opened, which should have been an opportunity to agree also about the completion of the short connector between South Station and Gosser station. This Leoben could become a hub for train connections to Vienna and Graz, to Carinthia on the Neumarkt saddle, over Paltental Liesingtal to Linz and Salzburg. This established a significant appreciation of the Leoben. Only with the passage of the state railway companies in the Austrian Federal Railways was renamed in Leoben Central Station.

In the northern area of the station, facing the coins mountain, the loading facilities of 1964 abandoned coal mining Seegraben were. A few stump tracks that extend partially in a westerly direction from the station area and today are the base of a construction company based there, are relics of that time.

On the street side was at the old railway station forecourt, the last stop and reverse loop of urban trolleybus lines after Donawitz and Göß.

New construction and remodeling

1970 to 1975 the old station was demolished and replaced by a new building by the architect Bruno Riegler. The new concourse was doing artistically decorated with sculptured friezes of Rudolf Kedl and two email images of Giselbert Hoke. On the square in a sculpture by Helmuth Gsöllpointner was erected. In addition, a multi-storey factory building was erected adjacent to the north, which houses the driving service line among others.

2003-2005 the Shoo building, the platform facilities, pedestrian tunnel and the forecourt were modernized. The station hall and the works of art were left. It was while trying the new buildings with the old as possible to connect aesthetically and to make the station customer friendly. An important task of the architects was to connect the platforms via the pedestrian tunnel to the station hall and the town.

Traffic

Long-distance traffic

Topographically spacious Leoben is located at the intersection of the axes Vienna -Villach in northeast-southwest direction and Graz -Innsbruck, Salzburg, Linz in South-East -west and north-west direction. These main lines the range of national long-distance passenger ÖBB is aligned with almost all long-distance trains offer a scheduled stop in Leoben. The journey time is 45 to 60 minutes to Graz to Vienna and Villach about two hours, according to Linz and Salzburg around three to Innsbruck about five hours. Since the first clock schedule, there were only a few moves that are not considered here in some timetable periods. Was the offer over many years equally well equipped in both main roads such as in two- hour intervals, the direct connections of Südost-West/Nordwest-Achse from 2005 year by year were less. Only for the relation Graz -Salzburg remained a two -hour intervals. Linz is currently not directly available (as of 2011 ).

One reason for this development is more in the distant environment as a near: The first stage of Leoben west to Selzthal can be covered quickly by the Gallows Hill tunnel and the well-developed Schoberpass route. At the subsequent sections Selzthal -Linz and Selzthal - Bischofshofen Wörgl offer unattractive journey times. The still largely single-track route Enns Valley is also regularly affected by multi-week range locks in a two year cycle.

For decades, Leoben was good ( Venice, Milan, Rome) involved in the international long-distance Vienna - Italy. Currently, he is reduced to a single night between Vienna and Rome. Short holdings of each timetable periods had few connections Zagreb -Graz- Linz- Prague, with coaches and Zurich -Budapest and Graz, Salzburg and Paris. In East-West direction, the already long-standing relation - night Graz- Zurich remained with EN464/EN465 with almost the same travel time as 20 years ago and the daily relation Graz, Salzburg and Frankfurt ( Saarbrücken ). Since December 2010 there is a EC- Day Connection Villach- Vienna - Prague -Berlin- Hamburg.

Regional Transport

In the Styrian regional services in the near field Bruck ad Mur and St Michael, accessible at the periphery Miirzzuschlag, Neumarkt and Schladming directly from Leoben.

The former passenger transport to St. Michael along the Erzbergbahn an der Mur on the stations Göß and background mountain and on Donawitz, St. Peter Frei stone, Trofaiach after Vorderberg was adjusted. The latter track had also regionally tourist importance for the traffic to Praebichl until the late 1960s.

Freight traffic

The station itself has Leoben no facilities for cargo handling more but is shared with the neighboring station Niklas village a major hub for a significant volume of freight to and from the steel industry in Donawitz. The form feed ore from the Slovenian port of Koper via Graz and Jesenice, of Danube ports from Erzberg to the Schoberpass and coke and coal mainly from the Czech Republic and Poland on the route of the Northern Railway and the Semmering. For these heavy trains up to 2,000 tons a train split or bias power is on, with just three kilometers short while, but over 20 per thousand steep route to Donawitz usually required, will be supplied in Niklas village or Leoben. In addition, all must be overthrown coming from the south trains for the onward journey after Donawitz since the Donawitzer loop was about 300 meters north of the Göss Station. The outgoing Donawitz of freight, which in turn is partly distributed in Leoben, primarily consists of the semi-finished (block steel, Zargel ) and finished products (wire, rails ) together.

Operating characteristics

The car service line Leoben is except for the station area also responsible for the management of Gallows Hill tunnel. In the northern area, next to the post office building, the Tunnelrettungszug North is constantly provided its southern counterpart is located in the railway station of St. Michael. Although Leoben is no traction location, several locomotives are available around the clock standing by to take to provide the biasing services or to allow zügigeres reclamping.

City -side connection

On the street side of Leoben station is served by local bus routes in the nearby city center, according to Göß, Donawitz and Trofaiach as well as some regional bus lines.

Since the 1970s, was criticized by the population of the lack of short - and long-term parking options for private transport. Only the removal of all remaining old railway building parts for the local freight traffic in the southern area in the course of modernization in 2003 and the bank regulation in the course of the construction of the barrage of Mur funded additional short-term parking options in the nearby train station environment. The in 2009, the northern bypass of the city caused not only a mitigation of the traffic situation by the chronically congested tent blow road, but significantly favored the easier accessibility to the train station for the eastern districts.

The open only to Franz- Josef-Straße towards the main square with line of sight to the tower of the Gustav Adolf Church and these intersecting line of sight between the mutually -standing building fronts the main railway station and lying beyond the Mur Bridge Mining University ( in the photo on the right of the church ) together an urban attractive perspective quadrangle with buildings from old to new.
