Leonard Gansevoort

Leonard Gansevoort (* July 14, 1751 in Albany, Albany County, New York; † August 26, 1810 ) was an American lawyer, officer, judge and politician.

Career

Leonard Gansevoort studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1771 and commenced practice in Albany. During the Revolutionary War he held the rank of colonel in the light cavalry. During this time he was also a member of the Provincial Congress of New York 1775-1776. In the following year he was from 18 April to May 14, 1777 President of New York. He also worked 1777-1778 as Clerk of Albany County. Gansevoort was in the years 1778, 1779 and 1788 a member of the New York State Assembly. During this period he took in 1786 at the trade meeting in Annapolis (Maryland) part. Two years later he was elected to the Continental Congress. After that, he was from 1791 to 1793 in the Senate from New York. He then held from 1794 to 1797 the post of Judge of Albany County. Last year, he was also a member of the Council of Appointments.
