Leonard Plukenet

Leonard Plukenet (* January 1642; † July 6, 1706 in Westminster ) was an English botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Pluk. ".

Life

Leonard Plukenet was set by Queen Maria II to their greatly increasing collection of exotic plants, which was located in the gardens of Hampton Court Palace, to document and preserve. Later she appointed him royal professor of botany.

He supported John Ray in the design of the second volume of his work Historia Plantarum, published in London 1688. In his four -part work Phytographia he described many new and rare plants. A number of the more than 2700 Illustrations from John Banister. Until his death in 1706 was a Plukenet together about 8000 kinds of comprehensive herbarium. First purchased this the Bishop of Norwich. Later, the Herbarium went to Hans Sloane, who recorded it in his extensive collection. Today, the 23 volumes are part of the Sloane Herbarium of the Natural History Museum in London.

Ehrentaxon

Charles Plumier named in his honor the genus Plukenetia the plant family of the spurge family ( Euphorbiaceae ). Linnaeus later took the name.
