In 1913 he staged the first short films and two years later launched his career as a cinematographer in the film.

In the same year 1915 began Léonce -Henri Burel his collaboration with Abel Gance that culminated 1925/26, in the monumental biography of Napoleon and a total of 13 films should include. Also Gance colleague Jacques Feyder secured with three of his works during the 20 years the cooperation of the tech savvy and artistically innovative Burel. During the early talkie years Burels leveled off work, but he found in Robert Bresson in 1950 a director for its unpretentious people portraits Burel created amazingly clear and stark images.
