Burjak (2010)

Leonid Josipowitsch Burjak (Ukrainian Леонід Йосипович Буряк, Russian Леонид Иосифович Буряк; * July 10, 1953 in Odessa, Ukrainian SSR ) is a former Soviet- Ukrainian football player and current football coach.

Playing career

Burjak began his career as a football player in 1971 with Chernomorets Odessa, in 1973 he moved to Dynamo Kiev, who was then the most successful team of the Soviet football. With Dynamo Kiev Burjak in 1974 and 1975, Soviet champion, winning in 1974 the Soviet Cup. In the season 1974/75 the goalscoring midfielder won with Dynamo and the European Cup Winners' Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

In 1972 he played with the U-23 national team in the finals of the European Championship, where the team of the USSR, subject to the peers from the CSSR with 2:2 and 1:3. Between 1972 and 1983 graduated Burjak total of 53 games for the Soviet national team and scored 10 goals. In football tournament of the 1976 Olympics he won the bronze medal with the Soviet team at the 1982 World Cup and he was in the Soviet contingent, however, came during this tournament to no use.

With Dynamo Kiev Burjak was in the years 1977, 1980 and 1981 re- Soviet champion and 1978 and 1982 and Cup Winners' Cup. After disappointing for the team running season 1984 he was forced to leave the team, a total of Burjak had denied 304 inserts for Dynamo and scored 57 goals in the process.

His career continued into at Torpedo Moscow in 1987, he moved to Metalist Kharkiv and won with this team again in 1988 the Soviet Cup. The end of 1988 Burjak moved to Finland for club PS Kemi, from 1990, he played for Vantaan Palloseura.

Coaching career

His career as a coach began Burjak in 1991 during a stay in the U.S. until 1993, he coached the football team at the University of Evansville in Indiana. The end of 1993 he returned to Ukraine and was first manager of Niva Ternopil. In 1994 he was manager of Chernomorets Odessa and reached with this team for the seasons 1994/95 and 1995/96 respectively to the second place in the Wyschtscha Liha.

After he had trained for a short time in 1999, the team of Arsenal Tula in Russia's second highest league, the first football division, Burjak was from 2002 to 2003 head coach of the national team of Ukraine. After the qualification was clearly missed the European Championships in 2004, however, he had to give up this office and was replaced by Oleh Blokhin. In June 2005, Burjak head coach of Dynamo Kiev after he had already failed but with his team in qualifying for the UEFA Champions League by FC Thun in Switzerland, he was released in August 2005.

In 2012, he coached the Ukrainian first division PFK Olexandrija.

Awards

In 2004 Burjak was awarded the Order of Merit of Ukraine.
