Leonid Kubbel
Leonid Ivanovich Kubbel (Russian Леонид Иванович Куббель, originally Charles Arthur Leonid Kubbel; born December 25 1891jul / January 6 1892greg in St. Petersburg, .. † April 18, 1942 in Leningrad) was a Russian chess composer.
Biography
From professional Leonid Kubbel was a chemical engineer. His two brothers also dealt with the chess composition. Arwid Kubbel ( born November 12, 1889 in St. Petersburg, † 11 January 1938) published about 500 compositions of the Bohemian school, mainly with three Züger. The younger Yevgeny Kubbel (* October 23, 1894, † 1942) authored over 150 tasks, especially two Züger. Leonid Kubbel and his brother Yevgeny died during the Siege of Leningrad and were buried with another blockade victims in a mass grave. Arwid was arrested on 21 November 1937. The arrest was kept secret and later spread the false report that he had died in a Siberian gulag in nephritis. In fact, he was shot, rehabilitated in the Khrushchev thaw later.

Chess composition
Kubbel composed about 2300 chess problems ( mainly with three Züger ) and more than 500 studies. Over 500 compositions have received awards, including first prizes were 120. Kubbel managed various chess columns and influenced his views lines of development in chess composition.
