Leonid Polterovich

Leonid Polterovich (Russian Леонид В Полтерович; . Hebrew ליאוניד פולטרוביץ; born August 30, 1963 in Moscow ) is a Russian -born Israeli mathematician who deals with symplectic geometry and dynamical systems.

Polterovich visited in 1979 the Moscow State University, with a graduate degree in mechanics in 1984. Afterwards he was to 1987 as an engineer at the State Energy Research Institute " Krzhizhanovsky " in Moscow and from 1987 to 1989 as a scientist in the calibration system. He has published in the 1980s, some work on dynamic systems. In 1990 he received his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Tel Aviv in Yakov Sinai and Vitali Milman ( Topology Invariants of Lagrangian embeddings and Hamiltonian Dynamics ). In 1991, he was there, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor in 1994 and Professor in 1996. 2005 to 2007 he was chairman of the Department of Pure Mathematics at the University of Tel Aviv. In 2009 he was a visiting professor at the University of Chicago and in 1997/98 at the ETH Zurich. In 2010 he was a visiting professor at MSRI.

Polterovich deals with Hamiltonian dynamical systems, symplectic geometry and contact manifolds. He achieved new results with complex - analytic methods. With Eliashberg he solved the problem of Lagrangian knots in four - manifolds.

In 1996 he received the EMS price. In 1998 he was invited speaker at the ICM in Berlin ( Geometry on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms ). In 2003 he received the Michael Bruno Award of the Rothschild Foundation. In 1998 he received the Erdös Prize.

His doctoral counts Paul Biran.
