Leroy Jones

Leroy Jones ( born February 20, 1958 in New Orleans) is an American jazz trumpeter. After Digby Fairweather he is "one of the most interesting and kreativisten among the newer African-American traditionalists" of jazz.

Life and work

Jones began at age ten, playing the trumpet and transferred in 1971 to the cornet. In the same year he took over the management organized by Danny Barker Marching Band of Fairview Baptist Church, which he then after problems with the musicians' union, together with Gregory Davis further led (from the Dirty Dozen Brass Band) as Hurricane Brass Band. He also played in the St. Augustine High School Band. In 1974 he received a scholarship to Loyola Music Conservatory in his native city, which he perceived but only half a year, and then with Eddie Vinson to tour Canada and then perform with Della Reese. He also worked with Leroy Bates (1977-1978) and Hollis Carmouche (1978-1980) and other bands before he had his own quartet in 1980 New Orleans Finest founded; next he belonged to the Tuxedo Brass Band and the Louisiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble. Guest performances in the Netherlands ( 1982) and Singapore ( 1985-1986) followed. 1991 Jones joined the big band of Harry Connick. Since then he has won international acclaim and received in 1994 the opportunity to release his debut album. With his own band he went on an international tour and recorded more albums. He also played with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Dr. John and Susanne Riemer.
