Leslie Halliwell

Leslie Robert James Halliwell ( born February 23, 1929 in Bolton, Lancashire, † January 29, 1989 in Esher, Surrey ) was a British author, journalist and film historian film.

Life

After graduation Halliwell studied English Philology at St Catharine's College, Cambridge. But he soon turned to film journalism and has written numerous movie reviews. Until his retirement in 1986 Halliwell worked mainly for various production companies and for British television as a buyer of American films.

Special popularity reached Halliwell but especially by his film encyclopedias, which have appeared in numerous editions and long among the cinematic standard works. 1965 published the first film enthusiast be Filmgoers ' Companion, an encyclopedia with articles on filmmakers from all disciplines, films, designs and production companies. For the preface of this work Halliwell Alfred Hitchcock could win. 1977 also appeared the first edition of Halliwell's Film Guide with numerous reviews of productions from the silent film era. In 1979 he published beyond Halliwell 's Television Companion. All three standard works find until now regularly revised editions. In addition Halliwell wrote more books and articles on film history and individual productions, memoirs ( Seats in All Parts ) and numerous articles for the Daily Mail newspaper.

On January 29, 1989 Leslie Halliwell died at the age of 59 years in Surrey from cancer.
