Lesser Polish dialect

The Malopolska, named after the language of the inhabitants of the former Duchy of Lesser Poland, is one of the four major dialect groups of the Polish. It is spoken in the south of Poland, Krakow is considered as the center. On a small Polish substrate also the Lviv dialect of the former Polish city of Lvov -based (Polish Lwów ) ​​in Ukraine.

Features common to all small Polish dialects are the following:

  • The so-called " Masurieren ", i.e. the pronunciation as sz s, of ż as z, cz as c and dz as dz ( ie, for example sary gray, zona wife, etc.);
  • Assimilation of voiceless consonants to the following sonant, even beyond the word boundary (hence the characteristic pronunciation of the ending- as - SMY ZMY );
  • Change of word-final -ch to -k ( na nogak on his feet, Krzan horseradish ).

For individual small Polish dialects the good preservation of the original Nasal include typical ą and ę in the area around Krakow and the Erstsilbenbetonung in the Podhale region.
