Lesslie Newbigin

James Edward Lesslie Newbigin ( born December 8, 1909 in Newcastle upon Tyne, † January 30, 1998 in Herne Hill, London) was a missionary of the Church of Scotland in Madras ( India), Bishop of the Church of South India and Mission Theologian at Selly Oak College in Birmingham, England. He had considerable influence in the worldwide ecumenical movement and in the mission science, in particular with its reflection on mission in the culturally and religiously pluralistic Western world of the late twentieth century. Like his contemporary South African David Bosch Newbigin was a bridge-building personality, Evangelical Alliance were taken by the pulses in the World Council of Churches as well as in the World and their influence continues to this day.
