Letov Å -39

The aircraft Letov Š -39 is a single-engine, two-seat high-wing aircraft, which was developed as a sport plane. The first flight of the machine took place in 1931. This type was produced by the Letov works in Letnany in Prague in Czechoslovakia. The design resulted from Alois Smolik. The chassis was rigid and had a tail skid. The wing was braced and supported himself as from the area of the landing gear. The engine drove a two - bladed wooden propeller. Wing, elevator and rudder were unswept and each showed a rectangular outline. The machines were primarily used by flying clubs.

The prototype was the only 37 kW payable Orion LL -50 equipped. The machine showed very good flight characteristics. Due to the mounted approximately on the half of the fixed wing leading edge slats, the machine also exhibited excellent low speed characteristics. There was then a series of 23 machines placed, which were equipped with a Walter Polaris radial engine of 40 kW. These machines were manufactured in 1932.

Since the airframe has not been reached by the engine by far, they built a prototype in 1933, with much more Pobjoy R engine and called the machine Š 139th These experiments satisfied. One decided however on the show for an equally strong Walter Minor 4 from domestic production. Since this was a series motor, the bow section had to be redesigned. The series machines had the name Š 239th
