Leunclavius

John Löwenklau, also: Johann Lewenklaw, Leunclavius ​​, Amelsburnus (* presumably in July 1541 in Coesfeld, † June 1594 in Vienna ) was a German legal scholar, Hellenist and historians.

Life

Löwenklau studied from 1555 at the University of Wittenberg in Philipp Melanchthon, in 1562, he moved to the University of Heidelberg, where from 1563 he pursued a degree in law and this went to the University of Basel in winter semester 1566. They had already chosen him to succeed in the Chair of the Hellenist Wilhelm Xylander in Heidelberg. Since he was himself as Kryptocalvinist, but he came after the death of Frederick III. of the Palatinate, by the change in church policy, no longer in the office.

Since 1565 was the dependent of patrons scholars therefore traveled extensively, which led him to the Orient and on which he earned the reputation of an expert in Turkish history acquired by his contemporaries.
