Lev Artsimovich

Lev Andreevich Arzimowitsch (Russian Лев Андреевич Арцимович, scientific transliteration Lev Andreevič Arcimovič; * 12 Februarjul / February 25 1909greg in Moscow, .. † March 1, 1973 in Moscow) was a Soviet physicist.

Arzimowitsch worked in the field of nuclear fusion and plasma physics. He is regarded as one of the " fathers of the tokamak ", a special form of nuclear fusion reactor. 1955, the first tokamak in Moscow was built. Until 1970, no one outside the Soviet Union did research in this technology.

Arzimowitsch was once asked when the first thermonuclear power station to " If humanity needs it or a little earlier ," was the reply.

In 1953 he became a member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and from 1957 he was a member of the local committee. In 1953 he was awarded the Stalin Prize for his contributions to Atomenergieprogamm. In 1969 he was awarded the title of Hero of Socialist Labor, the highest civilian honor of the Soviet Union awarded.

The crater Artsimovich on the Moon is named after him.
