Lev Zhurbin

Lev Alexandrovich Shurbin (Russian Лев Александрович Журбин, also Lev Zhurbin transcribed or Ljova called; born August 18, 1978 in Moscow ) is a Russian composer, arranger and violist.

The son of the composer Alexander Shurbin and the poet Irena Ginzburg from the age of four viola lessons with Galina Turchaninowa, the teacher of Maxim Vengerov and Vadim Repin. He came in 1990 with his parents to the United States and studied at the Juilliard School of Music with Samuel Rhodes, the violist of the Juilliard String Quartet.

Zhurbin composed more than 70 works for classical ensemble, jazz and folk groups, in addition, more than 20 film scores. In 2005 he participated in the Sundance Institute 's Film Composers Lab part. In 2007 he was a member of Osvaldo Golijov when composing the music for Francis Ford Coppola's film Youth without Youth. After staying at the Canadian Banff Centre in 2008 he gave guest lectures on film music composition at New York University.

As a violist passes Zhurbin own group Ljova and the Kontraband, is a member of the Gypsy Orchestra Romashka and contemporary music ensembles Percussia and forms with Jakub Omsky the duo Joint Custody. As an arranger, he worked among others for Yo - Yo Ma Silk Road Ensemble, the Kronos Quartet, Jay -Z, Gustavo Santaolalla, Osvaldo Golijov and Alondra de la Parra. He played a viola by Alexander Tulchinsky and a six-string " Famiola " by Eric Aceto.
