Liberal Democratic Congress

The Liberal Democratic Congress (Polish Congress Liberalno - Demokratyczny, KLD ) was a Christian- liberal party in Poland.

The KLD has emerged from the Solidarity movement. Party leader was the current Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk. The party called for a free market economy and individual freedom and advocated European integration, rapid privatization of state-owned enterprises and the decentralization of the government.

In the parliamentary elections in 1991, the KLD won 7.5 % of the vote and went with 37 of 460 seats in the Sejm. 1993 KLD received only 4.0% of the votes and thus failed at the restrictive clause. On 20 March 1994, the party merged with the Democratic Union ( Unia Demokratyczna, UD ) for the Freedom Union ( Unia Wolności, UW).

In 2001, some party members founded together with members of the Electoral Action Solidarity ( Solidarność Akcja Wyborcza, AWS) under the leadership of Donald Tusk, the current ruling party Civic Platform ( Platforma Obywatelska, PO).

In 2005, the UW finally to the Democratic Party ( Partia Demokratyczna PD) was reorganized.
