Liberty Statue (Budapest)

The Statue of Liberty (Hungarian: Szabadság szobor ) in Budapest, capital of Hungary, is on the Gellért Hill in front of the citadel on the Buda side. It is the largest of a group of three bronze statues that were in honor of the soldiers who liberated the country in World War II, built in 1947. It is set up so that they can be seen from almost any location in Budapest. Shown is a female figure, which holds a palm frond in the sky above him. The 14-meter- high statue is about 40 meters high with its base. A Hungarian nurse has been the model.

According to legend they originally held a propeller in their hands and should therefore remember Miklós Horthy's son, who was killed as a test flyer at the beginning of World War II. The propeller but was then replaced after the invasion of the Red Army in February 1945 by the palm branch, because you did not want to remember Miklós Horthy, who was close to the Hitler regime. It is actually in the Russian version of the statue to another design of the same sculptor.

Another statue shows a very powerful dragon slayer who fights with his bare fist against the dragon; the third statue on bringing the flame of freedom.

Every year on 20 August, the flares are ignited on the national holiday from here.

The Statue of Liberty is the motif on the 10 -forint coin of valid till 1990 series.
