The Library of the Free University of Bolzano (. Ital Biblioteca della Libera Università di Bolzano, English The Library of the Free University of Bozen / Bolzano) is - according to the State Library " Dr. Friedrich Teßmann "- the largest academic library in South Tyrol.

Overview

The media of the university are mainly in the languages ​​of the Free University of Bolzano ( German, Italian and English ) available. At the site there are also Brixen Ladin media. The library is based in the main building of the Free University of Bolzano ( University Square 1). Branch offices exist in Bressanone and Brunico. With the oldest academic library in the country, the library of the Philosophical- Theological College Brixen, there is a close cooperation. Until the completion of the university building in Bressanone Brixen, the field office was housed in the premises of the university library.

History

With the founding of the Free University In 1997, the construction of a university library. Thanks to the Foundation Cassa di Risparmio an appropriate financial framework has been created for the library foundation. The library has developed into an aligned to the students and their needs means which is firmly anchored in the trilingual region and is responsible for important electronic services within the South Tyrolean librarianship. Since 1998, the stock of the university library is electronically searchable, as it added a eLibrary.

Organization

The library is, like the University itself, spread over branches in Bolzano, Bressanone and Brunico, Bolzano where the location acts as a central library. For a better service, the first formal breakdown by branch libraries in 2008 was resolved in favor of four cross-site departments:

  • Subject & Liaison Librarians (specialist advice and support to students and researchers )

  • Media Processing ( acquisition, development and provision of information carriers and information).

The library services of decentralized settled institutions of the University (eg, Language Centre, Learning Workshop ) are supervised by the Central Library or the relevant part library.

The main task

The central task of the Library of the Free University of Bolzano is to provide demand-oriented stocks and information services for teaching, research and lifelong learning. Key tasks include:

  • Establishment and development of the digital library,
  • Development of information literacy in the context of courses, target group-oriented training and development courses
  • Delivering different space for differentiated teaching and learning,
  • Development of innovative solutions, active participation in research projects and networking with national and international partners.

Services

During the academic year the library in Bolzano stays open until 24.00 clock. In the academic year 2009/ 10, the opening times have been extended to Sunday during the exam period for students. Graduands, graduate students and faculty members are available on request unrestricted access.

Media that are not immediately available may be requested via interlibrary loan and document delivery service. Since 2005, all internal customers - students, researchers and teachers - the articles on document delivery ordered electronically and thus transmitted directly to their jobs without delay after the arrival in the library. The library offers a free courier service between the libraries Brunico, Bressanone and Bolzano. Since February 2007 there has been a courier between the different sites of the Library of the Free University and the Public Library Schlandersburg in Schlanders, Vinschgau. 2010 can be ordered in St. Martin in Thurn in Val Badia and picked up there media from the library in the library of the Ladin Cultural Institute Micurà de beet.

The University Press Bolzano University Press is the self-publishing of the Free University of Bolzano, which is coordinated by the Library since November 2007.

Rooms and equipment

In the early years there were still no building. These had first to be designed and built. Until then, the libraries were accommodated temporarily. While the library Bolzano was the former State Hospital (Old hospital ) housed in the Bolzano city center, there were at the site Brixen an agreement with the Philosophical- Theological College Brixen, whose seminar library has been greatly expanded and remodeled. Since there is a close cooperation between the two libraries.

For the newly-founded University libraries were constructed in each case as part of the new buildings (completed in 2003 in Bolzano, Bressanone 2004) at the sites of Bolzano and Bressanone. Students and staff of the University or the Eduroam project can use Wireless LAN.

For the location of Brunico a new building is provided which combines the library of the University, the city library, city archive and the NC Kaser - estate under one roof. The move is expected in June 2013.

The media holdings of the library is based on study and research of special facilities of the university ( Language Centre, Centre for Language Studies ) and the five faculties of the Free University of Bolzano. The inventory build-up takes place in the following fields: economics, law, agricultural sciences, engineering, education, psychology, sociology, computer science, art and linguistics. In addition, media from the edge scientific areas and media are purchased for language acquisition. Due to the three languages ​​of the Free University of Bolzano media in German, English and Italian precedence. The acquisition is the library for years in the use of Approval Plans. In addition, the library fulfills the current needs of the customers. Financing

The largest proportion of core funding comes from the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. A small percentage is pumped in from the Ministry of Education, University and Research and from the income from tuition fees. Projects

The library has tried to co-operation within and outside the university since its inception, especially in the field of digital innovation. Thus, the Regensburg (RVK ) was translated into English and Italian, according to guidelines that were set out in the document " Guidelines Brixener " 29 July 1999. In collaboration with the Faculty of computer science at the Free University of Bozen you developed the chatbot BOB: The " Cybrarian " support around the clock, the reference work of librarians and improves the usability of the library. The library participates in a project funded by the European Union research project entitled " Development of multilingual information retrieval systems ", called CACAO (Cross -language Access to Catalogues and Online Libraries). Musil (Multilingual Search in Libraries), the multilingual search system which was developed by the Library in cooperation with the Faculty of computer science and of the company CELI and went online in October 2007, was both the basis for the EU project as well as first results of this research cooperation. Cooperations

The information centers on the axis Innsbruck- Bolzano - Trento operate joint services. With the Laimburg Research Centre and the South Tyrolean Farmers' Federation, the library working on a virtual agricultural union catalog. Together with the ESSPER service the Italian economic journals are evaluated. Agreement for intensive cooperation in terms of inventory build-up and the mutual exploitation of stocks there is with the philosophical- theological seminary of Brixen and the Eurac research - European Academy Bolzano. In January 2011, the book collection of the Museion was moved into the Library of the Free University of Bolzano. 2011, the book inventory of the Musikhochschule C. Monteverdi Bolzano was taken.

Like other libraries also uses the Library of the Free University of the benchmarking system for academic libraries, the so-called BIX Library Index, for their own positioning and to improve services. GIM ( Gruppo Interuniversitario per il monitoraggio dei Sistemi di Ateneo Bibliotecari ) is the benchmarking system for the Italian area since 2000.
