Liferea

Liferea (Linux Feed Reader) is a free program for viewing of news feeds in various formats. It was developed based on GTK and is available for many Linux distributions under the GNU GPL license available as a free package. Currently Liferea is used for the following feed formats:

  • RSS / RDF
  • CDF
  • Atom
  • OPML

In addition, Liferea also supports podcasting. Episodes appear as an appendix to the description and can be downloaded or their URLs are passed to other programs.

Functions

Liferea is programmed in C and uses no interpreter languages.

To facilitate reading articles or blog comments linked, Liferea allows the loading of web pages in the embedded HTML browser, WebKit used for display. Additionally, the user can produce a variety of predefined external browser programs for opening links using (Mozilla, Firefox, Netscape, Opera, Epiphany, Konqueror ).

By storing feed subscriptions in different folders can be accessed on the headlines of the subscription. With a corresponding configuration option Liferea displays only the unread headlines. In this way we obtain a quick overview of all the new headlines in one category.

Similar evolution Liferea supports so-called search folders, which are a permanent search function. Search folders each containing all headlines all subscriptions that match its search rules.

Liferea allows syncing with online services such as TinyTinyRSS and TheOldReader.

Browser Integration

In Epiphany offered the newsfeeds Subscription Extension of the respective web feeds can be selectively added to Liferea.

Also, Firefox 1.5 has an extension that allows new subscription just click on the Live Bookmarks icon in the Firefox address bar of the list of subscriptions add.

Since Firefox 2.0 Liferea can be integrated without any special extension. For this, the belonging to Liferea script " liferea -add - feed" must be configured in the Firefox settings.
