Lightbulb Sun is the sixth studio album by British progressive rock band Porcupine Tree. It appeared in 2000 at Kscope and snapper.

Creation and publication

Lightbulb Sun was recorded in Wales and England. A string quartet was involved in the recording. Chris Blair mastered the album at Abbey Road Studios.

In 2001 appeared an edition with bonus CD, in 2008 a DVD-Audio with a remastered and a surround version of the album as well as other bonus tracks.

Tracklist and style

The pieces were written by Steven Wilson, the seventh in collaboration with Colin Edwin. The ninth piece is a joint effort of all the band members. For the fifth piece of a voice recording of the leader of Heaven's Gate was used.

Lightbulb Sun is a total quieter album than its predecessor Stupid Dream, the atmosphere is usually melancholic. There you will find influences from artpop, Britpop, psychedelic rock, alternative rock and grunge.

Reception

The album was well received by the press. Thomas Kerpen it praises Ox- fanzine as a " an extremely aesthetic, artful rock album, which builds a bridge between catchy pop and improvised jam session and whose complexity we as listeners long did something." Markus Peltner of the Baby Blue Pages sums it up: "This album contains no weaknesses, but for a lot of highlights. Here no music is offered, which can be heard on the radio. Here music is offered often, poignant ' is likely to affect that grabs one and entrains. Great cinema and already a classic. "This music magazine eclipsed chose Lightbulb Sun on the 38th of its list of the 150 most important prog albums.
