Lighthouse Park

The Lighthouse Park is a 75 hectare park in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The park is home to the Point Atkinson Lighthouse, located on the same south-western tip of West Vancouver and was declared on 18 May 1975 by the Government of Canada National Historic Site of Canada.

History

Captain Vancouver named Point to Point Atkinson to a friend. The Indians living there he called the tribe of Sk'iwitsut.

The first lighthouse was built in 1874. The surrounding area it was in 1881 acquired by the state in order to protect the forest from logging, so that the lighthouse against a dark background is more visible. The now existing, built on a hexagonal floor plan lighthouse was built in 1912. In the same year, the surrounding forest to the young church West Vancouver has been transferred.

During the Second World War, was built at Point Atkinson a Emplacement including barracks for the operation, which was to enemy ships or submarines deny passage through the Burrard Inlet. Two of these barracks are still preserved.

Flora

It is known the area for the well-preserved Urvegetation a piece of rainforest. The trees consists of Douglas - fir, hemlock and giant trees of life, which are up to 500 years old, reaching a height of over 60 meters. A ten- kilometer network of hiking trails lead to the park.

Geology

Point Atkinson marks the spot where the Burrard Inlet meets Howe Sound. On the coast is the underground, 96-187 million year old granite visible.

Trivia

The Lighthouse Point Atkinson is known by the intro of the series Harper's Iceland, which ran on the German TV station ProSieben.
