Flowering Ovalblättriger privet

The Ovalblättrige privet ( Ligustrum ovalifolium ) is a Strauchart, which belongs to the olive family ( Oleaceae ).

The natural distribution is Japan ( Honshu islands, Shikoku and Kyushu ), as well as the southern Korea. The Japanese name is Oba ibota (大 叶 水 蝋, dt " big-leaf Privet "). Two varieties are described from Japan: var hisauchii (オカイボタ, Oka ibota ) and var pacificum (ハチジョオイボタ, Hachijo ibota ).

Description

The Ovalblättrige privet is an evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub or small tree that is four to five, in exceptional cases up to six meters high. The growth is maintained, there is achieved a width of approximately three meters.

The opposite leaves are oval, shiny and significantly greater than in domestic ordinary privet. Only in cold winters the shrub loses its leaves. The flowers are about 10 cm long panicles together, they are whitish and smell strict. The resulting berries are pea-sized and glossy black.

Horticulture use

The Ovalblättrige privet is used mainly as a hedge plant use, it is very cut tolerated. Cold or shady locations will not be tolerated, otherwise the plant is undemanding.

  • ' Argenteum ': sheet white margins
  • ' Aureum ': Gold privet, yellow leaf margins, slow-growing than the species
