History

The construction work for the first tube began under the direction of Othmar Ammann early 1934 and was completed with the opening end of 1937. Additional tubes were added in 1945 and 1957.

Traffic

Each of the three tubes has two lanes. Through the north tube of the traffic flows from Manhattan to Weehawken, by the south tube in the opposite direction. The flow of traffic through the central tube is dynamically controlled. In the morning rush hour, both tracks are passable only in the direction of Manhattan, where a trace is reserved only for buses. In the late afternoon the tube is open only for vehicles to New Jersey. Outside these hours, the two tracks in the oncoming traffic are passable.

The entrance to the north tube is located in Manhattan at the height of 39th Avenue Street/11th. About 250 meters south-east of it, on 10th Avenue between 38th Street and 39th Street, is the tunnel portal of the intermediate tube and the south tube, leading from the several ramps directly into the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

The driveway at the west portal is running due to the large difference in height as a helix. Directly above the portal is a baseball and football stadium
